Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Deputy Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council Malik Agar

On June 29, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Deputy Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of the Republic of the Sudan Malik Agar, who is in Moscow on a working visit. Malik Agar relayed a verbal message which Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The talks focused on developments in Sudan, where armed confrontation is still going on between the country’s regular army units and Rapid Support Forces. The Russian Foreign Minister expressed deep concern over the military and political crisis in Sudan, and its dangerous implications for the country and the entire region, emphasising a strong need for taking steps to put an end to hostilities without delay. He also reaffirmed Russia’s principled approach to supporting Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty, and the unacceptability of external interference in the Sudan’s domestic affairs.

The two officials also reviewed several practical aspects of the efforts to further strengthen the traditionally friendly relationship between Russia and Sudan, including efforts to maintain regular political dialogue and coordinate the two countries’ approaches in the UN and other international agencies, and also to step up the mutually beneficial cooperation in the development and production of mineral resources, as well as in agriculture and the energy sector.
